Der Name Unije leitet sich vom griechischen Wort „heneios“ ab, was Feld bedeutet. Ein kroatisches \u00c4quivalent des Namens w\u00e4re demnach „Upolje“, was so viel wie „auf dem Feld“ bedeutet. <\/p>\n
Die ersten Informationen \u00fcber Unije stammen von dem venezianischen Jesuiten Alberto Fortis in seinem ber\u00fchmten Werk „Reise durch Dalmatien“ aus dem Jahr 1774. In Unije gibt es nur wenige Einwohner, die einen bescheidenen Lebensstil pflegen. Die Hauptprodukte sind Holz, Honig und Wachs.<\/p>\n
Das Meer rund um die Insel ist reich an Fischen, vor allem Thunfisch, Makrele, Sardelle und auch Tintenfisch.<\/p>\n

Im Jahr 1921 erreichte Unije mit 783 Einwohnern ihren Bev\u00f6lkerungsh\u00f6chststand, doch danach wanderten viele Inselbewohner, zumeist in die USA, aus. Die Einwohner von Unije, von denen viele aus Amerika zur\u00fcckgekehrt sind, leben heute haupts\u00e4chlich von Landwirtschaft und Tourismus. <\/p>\n
